It’s been a while since I’ve gotten to PvP with friends, and it’s always amazing to see what 5 people can do to change a pug around. (Would love to be able to do 10 without a rated group, but, I get why it’s not allowed.)

First was EotS, with an excellent pug pally – Zamasia from Vashj – doing a great job of communicating along with the 5 of us flooding /bg with updates. Horde went strong mid/BET/DR, leaving only 3 at FRR. We had gone MT and immediately diverted over to FRR, hitting it and taking it before MT flipped. I very much prefer assaulting the other side of the map early in the match to disrupt the initial setup and test the other team.

The map skewed weak/strong sides, with DR falling to the Horde and a bunch of our guys fighting in mid. BET was weak so we probed at it for a bit from FRR. Finally, the guys in mid went to assist DR, drawing folks off. We hit the crossroads between FRR/BET/Mid/Spawn, where the horde was milling about, engaged them for about 20 seconds, then got the hell out of there and slammed into BET.

The Horde went down 3-1 at this point, pouring a lot of resources into taking and holding DR, occasionally sending teams to take BET, which … well, they couldn’t. They faced Rades (on a HUNTER, suck it, Horde) and Cynwise with three awesome healers – Snack, Dee, and Serensis – backing them up.

I should use this battle as an example of how rez vectors can be used to split a team in two. There were 3-5 Horde harassing BET and FRR constantly, but they never got anywhere because they never grouped up. Their rez vector was back to the spawn point. So half would be on a rez wave with a distance to run to support the offense, while their friends were out there getting slaughtered individually. Meanwhile, the bulk of the Horde was bottled up defending DR, so their rez vector was only to that location, unable to coordinate with a third of their team to take a base.

Now, there were some concerted charges out of DR. I don’t want it to sound like rez vectors are everything. But when those charges are met with good team play (and it wasn’t just Waypoint, we had good play from a lot of people in that EotS) then suddenly the question of where they go when they die becomes important.

Good battle. Great warmup.

Second battle of the night was Warsong Gulch. We were facing 4 healers on the other team and it was a hard-fought battle. We started off by breaking their initial rush with a strong defense in the FR, but they eventually got the flag away and we had to just keep on after them. We had a few grabs – I brought it back once but went down in the flag room, it happens, Serensis saved the day with a great repick – but it was Snack’s pally who carried it as we hammered, and I mean HAMMERED, on those healers in their flag room. Halve-Zul’jin was crazy good, but we were in that flag room for a solid 6 or 7 minutes just hammering away at healers and DPS who got caught in our crossfire.

I was able to take a break and go eat, resummon Shaggy, and get back into it. That rarely happens, usually the burst is too great. But no, this hunter and I dueled from the rooftop to the floor, and I eventually won. I’d drop down, fear bomb, real bomb, distract the DK, and then port back up (out of reach of the Death Grips.) Soulburned seeds were hit on cool down, usually with Demon Soul to back up the damage and ramp up the pressure on the healers.

Eventually, they went down. I should have asked my Waypoint friends to let me return the flag, since I’m working on that achievement, but I forgot and wasn’t fast enough on the clicks. (It’s my weakness, I’m always a little too slow, a little out of position. Something to work on.) Snack capped, we cheered, and then got BACK to work killing healers. We’d gotten the FC down with 2 healers still up.

I grabbed the flag again with about 6 minutes left and did my FC thing across the field. There were some tense moments, since the Horde grabbed the flag as well – this was by no means won – and I played peekaboo around the stumps with DKs and reminded mages that I have better CC than they do.

Eventually, I heard Dee go down so I hit a speed pot to get inside the building. She immediately was like, CYN DID YOU USE A SPEED POT and I was like YUS and she was like BAD KINEWISE NO BISCUIT and I was like I LIKE TO RUN FAST OKAY and then there was a mage so I stopped and killed it.

Killing mages doesn’t really get old on a Warlock.

Horde led a last minute concerted rush into the FR in the last 2 minutes. It was pretty intense for those last 30 seconds, lots of CDs going, lots of AoE, lots of DEAR LORD HANG ON I NEED MORE DEFENSIVE CDs and then it was over.

We’d won. We’d won with an AFK ghost, no less.

aw yeah.

I’d spent the first EotS in my gnome outfit from Saving Private Gnomer, which illustrated three things:

You can have silly fun and still be professional about your task.

That outfit shows gnome midriff! I had NO IDEA, I’d never seen it on a big screen before! I’m all, WOAH GNOME BELLYBUTTONS and LOW RISE PANTS WHAT? (Mechatorque, you sly devil.)

PvP is WAY more fun with friends.

Tonight’s verdict: A+++. Would PvP again.

Waypoint PvP night.
